Protective Style – Kinky twists

On October 15, 2011, in Hair, by Natural Nigerian

After wearing my hair out for the last 2 months (that statement reads true both ways because I manipulated that hair until it was tired), I have put it in a protective style.

I wore it out because I wanted to get to know my hair a little bit more and also to see if I could improve on styling my hair. The first objective has been met but I still really need to work on the second one. Sadly, I am currently not a poster child for how to wear natural hair in a cute way.

I will wear these twists (made with synthetic kinky hair) for about 2 months. Because you can’t take a break from your hair even when it is “covered”,  I will maintain the following regime:

  • Spritz my hair daily and sealing with coconut oil – I am doing this now with just water and glycerin. I could have used a light leave-in conditioner as well, but I am not convinced that it will not leave whitish residue on my hair. I will try this out just before I am due for a shampoo and see if my fears were unfounded.
  • Wash my hair at least once a fortnight and ideally once a week. This will really be more about washing my scalp and letting it breathe than washing the actual hair.
  • Deep Condition every 2-3 weeks. I have never tried this with an extension before so I will do an update on how this goes.
  • I will also not be brushing the hair around my edges unless I am going out.  I will slick them back with some homemade flaxseed gel.

I like the fact that the extensions are close to the texture as my hair.

My hope is that when I see my hair in 2 months time:

  • It will not be bone dry.
  • I would have gained some length.

They look really good. I love kinky twists. That’s a good plan you have there, I’m pretty sure your hair will be in good shape when you take the twists out

Nice! After going back and forth (with myself!), I decided I’d do braids right before heading back to London so I can give my hair a break for 6 weeks.

I *have* to wash (with conditioner most times) my hair/extensions once a week because of the excessive sweating from all my classes. This will be very interesting.

Your hair will be thankful for the break :)

I love kinky twists, discovered them about 6 months ago and they are now my go to style. Easy to manage and maintain and you will definitely get some length when you take them out.

    Enjoy!

I lost a lot of hair the two times I did the kinky twists. I deep conditioned, spritzed…and still had the same results the second time around. Please keep us posted on your regimen. I will like to know what it is I’m doing wrong. This style seems to work for others. Why not for me? -_-..

Oh been on curly human hair extensions since my bc about 16months ago. Been thinking about switching to kinky twists. This looks real nice and very close to your texture. What kind of extensions did you use? The name please? Yes, please do keep us posted on your regimen. Thanks a lot.

    • I think the name was Royal something. The lady that does my hair bought it. You BC’d 16months ago? Where are the pictures? Where is the blog? Share please :)

:D yes o! last relaxer was 2009 holidays. Like most naturals, I tried it all!! I pretty much know my hair now so I’ve settled into a regime. I want length so its all about protective styling, protein treatments and oils esp olive. Unfortunately I don’t have a blog but I did take note of what I did and what worked/didn’t work. Been seriously toying with the idea of a blog. I’ll see how that goes. We definitely need more naija based natural voices (hair, body, mind, wellness etc). You are awesome, I enjoy coming on here and reading what you have to say and other comments too. So thank you for doing what some of us have been procrastinating about :)

  6. I’ve only done kinky twists once and since then I’ve sworn off it. I am not good at keeping extensions at all, and I am especially wary of kinky twists because the last ones I had done (years ago really) did not do any good for my hair. After taking those twists out, it took me a long time before I trusted someone to put extensions in my hair and they’ve never been kinky. I’ve recently seen kinky braids and I’d like to try those out, maybe they’d work better for me.

I am interested in your regimen, I’d especially like to know how you wash, deep condition and seal while wearing extensions.

    • I wore kinky extensions (the dread type where they actually sew your hair in) on and off for about 2 years. By the time I was done, my hair was a right mess. I am not sure it has fully recovered even now. This is my first time returning to any sort of kinky extension. The only difference is that I have decided that I will actually have and keep a hair regime this time. I will do this religiously and if it doesn’t work out, I will say no to Kinky extensions the world over after this.

I haven’t even washed it yet, but my intention is to wash it the same way I wash my hair: section it, wash the scalp and allow it to air-dry. I will also deep condition the same way I would DC my hair – overnight with a bag. The spritzing and sealing, I already do everyday and seal with coconut oil. I will try the leave-in and do an update on how that worked out. Perhaps I will take some pictures as well.

Good luck with your strategy. I’d like to know more about how the deep conditioning goes with the extensions in. I hope it works and then I too can try it.

  10. I need to get to this kinky thing as soon as i take out my braids, hopefully my scalp will not dry out and flake!

Your twists look great. I absolutely love kinky twists! They are one of my favourite protective styles. I’ve had these in for almost 3 weeks now. They are very light and I enjoy being able to style the twists differently. Most recently, I’ve been rocking the high bun.

Your Regimen sounds very similar to mine. Just that I’ve also incorporate the GHE to my Regimen and it saves me having to spritz my twists everyday.

  12. Protective twists are indeed protective. Though I do mine without extensions

  13. Dosh says:

I’m so proud of you, i cut my hair for the first time in a long time and i’ve sworn never to do it again cos short hair like natural hair is quite difficult to manage. Right now i’m in between looking for the right hair treatments that’ll make it grow healthy so i can go back to being careless with my hair, lol.
Very informative blog you have here, nice one

Thanks for sharing! I have been thinking of what to do with my hair for weeks. I will give this a try and I hope it comes out right on my head.

Hi i really like your kinky twist. I have been wearing and doing kinky twist on my hair for about 6 months now as a protective style. My kinky twist come down a little pass my shoulders and i love that length. My natural hair is about ear length now and i was wondering if there was any other protective style i could do besides kinky twist but i dont want to wear my hair fully natural now because i feel it is just a little to short. Do you know of any other protective styles i could do with fake hair to keep my length but also help my natural hair grow.

Wow…..good to know there’s a movement to be nappy in Naija. Really excited. I just got kinky twists recently and plan on keeping them for about 2 months. I hope to gain some length by the time I take them out. Really great blog.
