A few days ago, @fowora put up a link to the video below on Twitter. I believe I have seen one other video on natural hair in the Sh*t xx say/do series but I really like this one.
I wonder sometimes if we have not let our lives be taken over by this subject. It has a language of its own: Crunch, Pre-poo, Final rinse; more Acronyms than NASA uses: APL, EVOO, BAA, TWA, DT (I know you are dying to know, so here’s a link, lol!) and has even re-defined some words. I mean, when people talked about pineapple in the past it was usually in relation to a fruit. But now, pineapple is defined as gathering hair gently on top of head with a scrunchie to preserve curls for 2nd day hair.
Dynamics in the home have been changed. Silk pillowcases have replaced cotton to the bewilderment of some spouses, refrigerator shelves hold precious batches of whipped up hair goodies, Water bills have skyrocketed thanks to the need to thoroughly wash out Henna treatments.
Complete strangers take time out to convene at a pre-determined place to listen to people go on about hair for hours at a time. They shoot videos and pictures of themselves and their families and post it on the Web for thousands to view. I read with dismay how someone described her Henna treatments (pre- treatment, treatment and post treatment) taking her about 36hours to complete.
While I applaud the fact that we are forming new relationships, re-defining things (the billion dollar hair companies have serious competition thanks to the niche market natural hair has created), understanding how to take care of our hair and painstakingly cataloging this knowledge for all who are interested, I sometimes wonder what we used to do with our time pre-hair era.
