Shampooing without sectioning hair

Shampooing without sectioning hair

On January 8, 2013, in Hair, by Natural Nigerian

At the Capital Naturals Meet Up, someone mentioned that she did not need to section her hair before washing as it was soft and would not shrink or tangle. I was intrigued.

I could not remember the last time I had washed my hair without sectioning it and made a mental note to experiment with “un-sectioned” shampooing whenever I had some free time. That time came last week.

What I thought would happen did – my hair shrank as close to my scalp as it could as though it was running away from the shampoo bar I was using. My hair got tangled and it was impossible to get my fingers more than a centimeter into the forest that was residing on my scalp.

No problem, I whipped up a batch of moisturizing deep conditioner and spent the next hour gently coaxing the tangles out of my hair.

Notice the Huetiful Steamer just behind?

After about an hour, with about 300grams of conditioner in my hair, I finally got my hair to this state.

Normal never looked so good :)

So what do we learn from this?

  • There is no rule book, just a guide for caring for hair. What works for one does not work for all.

                         -  Her hair texture, and maybe length allowed her to get away with “section-less” shampooing. It might allow her to use a small toothed comb too rather than the wide-toothed one that is recommended for kinky natural hair

  • If something works, there is generally no need to fix it.
  • Experiment within reason but always have a plan to remedy a situation-gone-wrong.

                      – I like to experiment quite a bit but I always have a plan to bring things back to normal. The conditioner (for slip and moisture) and the steamer (for even more moisture so that my hair is pliable).

oh wow. Good thing you had a remedy.

  2. I used to do sectionless washing before, as I didn’t understand what the fuss about sectioning was. But as my hair grew longer and fuller, I understood better. If you hair is really full, you might just have to section, else, you might not be able to wash it to be really clean.

thanks for this revelation. i’ll like to ask for posts on how to make and keep natural hair presentable like styles to make for someone who works in a bank and needs to look presentable. i have been on ghana weaving but i discover it cuts my hair, the front especially and i’ll like to have a different look but i dint like fixing.
