Hand-in-hair Syndrome

Hand-in-hair Syndrome

On March 6, 2013, in Uncategorized, by Natural Nigerian

Since going natural, have you found that you have an urge to touch your hair? Feel the texture? There is no “running your hands through your hair” for most natural haired ladies, however, I find that a great number of them (myself included) constantly put their hands in their hair.

Why do you think that is?

Let me go first

  • I love to feel my hair texture. Having been used to years of relaxed hair, my unprocessed hair texture is still a wonder to me despite the fact that I have worn my hair natural and unprocessed for at least 4 years.
  • Running my hair from root to tip just once tells me a lot about my hair. It tells me if it is dry, moisturized, too oily, not oily enough, frizzy e.t.c. This helps me decide how I am going to treat my hair. E.g. Spritz the hair if it is not moisturized enough.
Now, your turn.
P.S: I am going to be responsible and tell you that you shouldn’t have your hand in your hair all the time. No matter how much you love it. That sort of love is not always welcome by your hair.

Lol oh my, I’m so guilty of this. The ‘syndrome’ becomes worse when the hair is in a protective style, I know that’s when I’m supposed to leave it alone but it helps me know when the hair is in dire need of moisture and whatever else it may be lacking.

Ah… Its a terrible affliction for me. I’m simply obsessed with how amazing my hair feels and I’ve been natural for a year now. You’d think I’d be used to it by now. Lol

I was on scrapped low-cut till I graduated in 2009 down to Feb 2010 when I had my last haircut on my birthday and I remember after 6month when my hair began to grow how my fingers never stopped caressing it. I would comb 7times a day and stand in front of the mirror for as long as I can keep touching.
Well I’ve since relaxed my hair but the growth just stalled. After discovering this site, I made up my mind last week to now transit to natural. Afterall I’ve been there while in Deeper Life so it shouldn’t be any strange now since I know better on how to treat my hair and equally understand that natural hair is my pride and heritage. Thank you NN and all of ya readers

I literally count the days till my protective style comes off so I can see what is going on with my hair. Lol.

Definitely a case of too much love being bad :)

    Boy do I know this!

Focusing on retaining length this year, so I see a lot of protective styling and discipline in my future…. Wish me luck x

Ha! Nice to know even someone Who has been natural much longer experiences this. Ive been natural about 2 months and I’m constantly touching my hair, amazed at the curls, coils and kinky texture.

Hand in hair syndrome…hmmmm… I have been scolded in traffic to concentrate” on my driving and get my hand out of my hair (well, not that my driving was bad, i was taking my time on the road lol). No wonder i can not bear to have my hair imprisoned in a protective style, I want to touch it all day long x_X. I touch it to feel the texture, the softness when its moisturized, i touch it to make sure it is in place and not pulling any funny stunts (my hair has a mind of its own). This is probably why i dont really like other people doing my hair. I can go on and on.

God will help me leave this hair to rest :)

I love MY hair! was putting it up this morning…pins and all and was amazed by it…i always am! but this is recent.
I’m not a toucher per se, I make my hair myself 99% of the time so I get to touch it then…at least once a week!
I also get to make my daughters hair and passing on this love of all things natural to her like you! Its amazing – i’m grateful to God for my hair!

    • It is an amazing thing indeed. Makes one wonder what else one is missing out on. I mean if natural hair has always been a part of us and we are so amazed at it because we have stopped “suppressing” its growth, what else can we re-discover?

It tells me that contrary to what my mum and other well meaning Nigerian women say, my hair is not tough or hard, but it is actually really curly, soft, beautiful and like my boyfriend says, sometimes feels like a cloud :)

Na lie o! I must tough my lovely twists everyday, twirl them with my fingers, a gentile tug here. Helps me assess its condition and I just love the texture anyway. Heeheehee

  11. I don’t like to touch my hair because I don’t like to get my hands greasy, also same reason why I don’t like to touch my face, unless i need to wipe out excess oil. lol
Plus my hair is usually in a pin and tuck style, so me touching it would mess up the style. I guess the only time I touch it is when I style it in the morning and put it away at night. or if I need to re-style it during the day. does that count as HIHS? though i’m sure I don;t have it

Lols. I also touch too. Moreso now that I just started noticing the growth after over a year post bc
