Natural Nigerian Hair Meet Up

The 12th edition of NITC has come and gone. I have to say that it was a really good one. Really good. We had the most people attend this meet up than ever before.

While I was unable to bring you details of the meet up prior to it happening, I am here to share the pictures. Yay!

So, this meet up was slightly different because we had certain elements.

Natural Nigerian Hair Meet Up

1. We partnered with Ozoz of KitchenButterfly. She was the NITC12 official caterer. That resulted in a sort of Nigerian Food Appreciation day during the meet up. How many of you had ever had a scent leaf (nchuanwu/effirin) dip prior to that time? Or a Paw Paw salsa? Or Beer Chilli Salsa? Or It was lovely, no?

Here is a copy of the menu of the day.

Having KitchenButterfly there was amazing. She sold OUT! Nothing was left. If that is not a testament to her cooking, I don't know what else is. Need some inspiration? Check out her Blog or her Instagram page

2. We continued the discussions after the speaking sessions. This was done by having small workshops with folks that had signed up for this. It was a more interactive session.

3. We did some good. We had a box available for the #SaveMirabel fund. We collected just a little over N11,000 for them. May seem like small money but every little bit helps to keep Nigeria's largest rape crisis center open. We have decided that we will adopt a charity every meet up. Every little helps.

4. We invited food vendors. So we had vendors selling Shito (don't know it? Biko Google it), Dried Cat Fish and Leafy Green Vegetables. We did tell you that we were increasing the scope of the NITC, right? This is a part of that.  We want to do all we can to help you support a natural, more healthy life style. This is step 1. more steps coming in the Future.

Then of course, it wouldn't be NITC without knowledge being shared. Unfortunately, I did not get a lot of pictures.

We had Natural Mane of Deep, Brown & Kinks come all the way from Abuja to give a talk on taking care of Natural Hair. She took on some myths and debunked them. She also facilitated a workshop with a few afterwards with a few ladies.

Did you know that Natural Mane was part of the very first NITC, held way back in 2011? She came back to support us at our 12th edition.

Next was Organic Dorothy. She explained the difference between Organic and Natural. This was such an important conversation to have. Why? Because there is a massive difference between the two. More on that in future posts. I did not get a clear shot of her, sorry.

By the way, she is a Pastry Chef and makes healthier cakes and more from organic produce. Gluten Intolerant? She's got you. She is going to make a cake for my daughter's November birthday so please look out for a review on that. (Yes, Dorothy, I know that you are only just reading that now, lol)

We also had a talk by Leylarh Cadne (she is in the middle in the picture above). And then she did an amazing workshop with some ladies who wanted their make up bags audited. See her amazing work on her website here. She has natural hair too so you can pick up a few tips. You can see the lovely flyer we did on her NITC12 participation here

Like I said earlier, I did not get a photo of all our speakers but Dr. Patrick Ijewere of Carib Health led a session. As always, he gave easy answers to all the questions that were thrown at him. Little wonder. Did you know that he studied Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine and has an MBA on top of all that?

Sherese Ijewere, the other half Carib Health and co-host of NITC

In Nigeria, we call such a person a Booker T. Washington. Anyhoo, all those degrees come in handy because he shares knowledge effortlessly and can tackle lots of topics from different angles. He also runs Carib Health with his wife, our co-host Sherese Ijewere. She is a Nutritionist so if you need help with your diet, please contact her. They even have a program where they train chefs to cook healthy.

Natural Nigerian NITC12 Lagos Hair Meet Up Adura O

The next speaker was Adura O (in the picture above, she is on the left). She of the kettlebells, yoga and sprints. I think she is awesome and coming back to Nigeria to knock behinds (my daughter reads this, it has to be PG 🙂 ) into shape is just awesome. In case, you don't know, she is a UK Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Coach. please hit her up if you need any help getting in shape. She has some short workout videos here

One of the things that she said during her session was that those people that say they have a Coke addiction should watch YouTube videos on how that same Coca Cola is used to clean toilets and then consider what it does to your insides. Words of wisdom, folks.

We had a lovely Giveaway sponsored by Zone Fitness. Thank you Esta, for this.

Right, let's look at some of the faces at the meet up.

NITC regular, Chidi, came with her beautiful mum.

Natural Mane is notoriously camera shy but I did get a few shots.

Berry was there with her husband, Cakes (who was the perfect partner, photographing her every move). They caught up with Tomi!

It was indeed! Kitchen butterfly exceeded my expectations. She took my checklist and ticked every box! Catfish will be back at NITC13. I imagine Henna will be too. See you then? It was good seeing you at this one.
